The Football League was established in 1888 at the suggestion of Aston Villa football club who wanted an organized competition to run for the season for their fellow professional football teams. Initially the league was limited to teams from the North and Midlands of England but gradually the big London and Southern teams also joined an in 1920 the remaining top Southern teams joined the Football League as the third division. In 1992 the top 22 teams broke away from the Football League and formed the Premier League.
